The blonde jumps out of bed and says, “I’ve had enough of this!” and goes downstairs.

The blonde returns to bed a few minutes later with a smile on her face.  So her husband asks, “The neighbor’s dog is still barking.  What have you been doing?”

The blonde replies, “I put their dog in OUR backyard.  Let’s see how THEY like it!”

Helping Homeless Dogs

"I've had a passion for animals my entire life," says country music star Carrie Underwood. "They're such sweet and gentle souls that love you just because you love them back." Photo used with permission from NAPSI. (NAPSI) A dog’s life may be improving thanks to a sweet singer and an unusual program.

The Program

Every year, nearly 4 million dogs end up in shelters and breed rescue organizations, which is why Pedigree is launching its sixth annual Adoption Drive. The program focuses on helping dogs in need through a variety of efforts that help generate awareness, food and funding.

The Singer

The singer is country music star Carrie Underwood. Because of their shared belief that all dogs deserve a loving home and Underwood’s outstanding advocacy for adoptable dogs, the Pedigree Brand is sponsoring her "Play On Tour," to highlight dog adoption.  "I can’t imagine life without my dog Ace," said Underwood. "Showing your support is easy; just become a fan, help a dog."

Getting Involved

Dog lovers who want to do their part to help can become a fan of Adoption Drive on Facebook. For each new fan, the pet food company will donate a bowl of food to help feed shelter dogs nationwide.

While on the Facebook page, dog lovers can also show their support by donating money to help find dogs loving homes, a portion of which will be matched by the brand, up to $500,000. All donations go to The Pedigree Foundation, a nonprofit organization benefiting animal shelters and breed rescues nationwide.

Pet Ownership

It’s important to note that adopting a pet is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Caring for a pet is a big responsibility, but most dog lovers will tell you that adding a dog to your family will bring a great deal of joy and happiness.

H3N8 Flu is for the Dogs

By Lucky on October 15th, 2009

Not only do we need to worry about the regular flu and the new H1N1 flu, we should also be concerned about the H3N8 flu for man’s best friend.

The H3N8 flu has been around for decades and doesn’t affect humans.  But it recently jumped species from horses to dogs and is now threatening dogs everywhere.

“This disease is incredibly contagious,” said Dr. David Bessler, senior emergency clinician at NYC Veterinary Specialists.  “Virtually every dog exposed to the virus will become infected.  It’s that contagious.”

Reading Dog Inspires Students

By Lucky on October 14th, 2009

A golden retriever named Abigail with the unique ability to read is inspiring challenged students in a school in St. Lucie County, Florida.

Her owner and trainer, art teacher Dan Galloway, has been taking Abigail with him to class for years.  He says Abigail has a knack of reaching students better than any textbook.  “Something magic is happening,” Galloway says.

Abigail and Dan work with special needs students to help them build confidence and perform simple tasks.  Galloway has taught Abigail to “read” 8 different words, including sit, get, down and roll.  What’s amazing is the canny canine can perform these tasks just by seeing the cue cards.

“It’s like sight reading,” Galloway says.  “She’s memorizing the shape of the word.  She’s already learned the behavior.”  Galloway says the kids are motivated to learn because if a dog can read, they can too.

Uninvited Guest

By Lucky on October 13th, 2009

A nice, tired-looking dog wandered into my yard.  I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home and was well cared for.

He calmly walked over to greet me.  I gave him a few pats on his head.  He then followed me into my house, slowly walked down the hall, curled up in the corner and fell asleep.  An hour later he awoke refreshed, went to the door, and I let him out.

The next day my new furry friend was back, greeted me in my yard, walked inside, lay down on his spot in the hall and slept again for about an hour.  This continued off and on for many days.

Curious, I pinned a note to his collar: “I would like to find out who is the owner of this wonderful sweet dog and ask if you are aware that almost every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap.”

The next day he arrived for his nap, with a different note pinned to his collar: “’He lives in a home with six children — two under the age of 3 — and he’s trying to catch up on his sleep.  Can I come with him tomorrow?”
